On submitting PDF files
The following advice has been received from the IEEE Computer Society Press regarding problems with PDF files submitted for the Proceedings:
Regarding PDF files, we will, and often do, accept PDF files. However, before you encourage PDF submission, you should review these concerns regarding PDF file submission:
- Currently, when papers are going to be submitted in PDF, the author will need to talk to our assigned editor prior to distilling their paper since PDF formatting requires setting-up the author's PDF distiller to insure the file is created to CS Press specifications (graphics resolution, font embedding, etc.). This is necessary since individual PDF distillers are often set-up to distill to screen (web) defaults instead of press defaults. The screen defaults do not reproduce well and do not match the quality of PDF files archived in the Computer Society's digital library.
- The extra steps necessary to help authors properly prepare a PDF file versus creating a postscript file, which is a relatively easy process, is the reason why we still encourage submission in postscript. If the paper is submitted in postscript, we can easily distill all papers for a conference into PDF files that meet our reproduction and archiving specifications.
- Basic PDF Distiller setting MUST be changed so PDF files are optimized, set to Acrobat 3.0 compatibility, all graphics are set to least 300 dpi resolution, ALL fonts are embedded, postscript settings DO NOT override distiller settings and page size is 612.0 x 792.0 points (8.5" x 11").
